GA4 Checkout Funnel Changes

Update Occurred: 2023-10-31T05:00:00Z

We’re changing how parts of the checkout funnel are tracked in GA4

As part of our continuing effort to provide the best GA4 Shopify integration available, we’re changing how we track the add_shipping_info and add_payment_info events in our GA4 app.

begin_checkout and purchase events will still fire server-side and remain unchanged.

From now on, we will track these events client-side using Shopify’s app pixels, instead of tracking server-side using the checkouts/update webhooks. We believe this will more accurately reflect the number of true events.

You may see a large decline in the number of these events. That is expected. Shopify’s checkout has many options, including Shop and PayPal Express checkouts. For these checkouts, adding_shipping_info and add_payment_info events are not relevant and will no longer be counted.

Also, App pixels are designed to work with Shopify’s one page checkout and checkout extensibility, which releases to general availability soon and will become mandatory in August of 2024.

If you installed the app prior to May 21st, 2023, please ensure that you have granted us App Pixels permissions, using the instructions and link in our previous email.

Improving Attribution

In addition to changing the checkout events, we’re adding some additional techniques to improve attribution in GA4.

If you’ve seen a large precentage Shopify web purchases with a (not set) source/medium, as described here, you will hopefully see an improvement after today. In particular, if you have landing pages hosted outside of Shopify that send users directly to the Shopify checkout, you should see a large improvement in purchase attribution.

Hi Kevin, excited for the update. Can you re-share the “instructions & link” to grant the App Pixel permissions?

@Sam what your store’s URL?

Hi @kevin , we’re keen to make sure and follow the App Pixel set-up steps. Can you please share the “instructions & link” as mentioned in your post?

Hi Sam,

I looks like that store is all set on permissions. No action on your end.
