Issue with Item Category Being Null in GA4 Purchase Events

Hi,

Currently utilizing SlideRule Analytics for our Google Analytics 4 (GA4) integration. We’ve encountered a specific issue where the ‘item_category’ field remains null in GA4 purchase events for items listed from our Shopify store. Interestingly, this issue doesn’t appear in other event types, where ‘item_category’ is populated as expected.

We are trying to ensure that the ‘item_category’ field correctly fetches information from the ‘product type’ attribute in our Shopify setup. Could you please guide us on how to correctly map or attach the ‘item_category’ information from Shopify to GA4 for purchase events? We’re looking for a solution to ensure consistent data tracking across all events.

I’ve attached a screenshot for reference, showing the ‘item_category’ field status in these events.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards

Unfortunately, Shopify does not include the item category in the purchase webhook so we don’t have this data.

We do have that as part of the combined Shopify and GA4 data we use for our chatbot. But there’s no way to get it from Shopify into GA4 at this time.

Thanks for your response. Does purchase webhook contain product type?

Maybe we can populate the item category in GA4 as product type in GA4.

No. That’s the issue. The webhook doesn’t contain product type. We’re looking into some infrastructure changes that may resolve this but don’t have timeline on when that would happen.

Thanks for your response we’re looking forward to see this feature.
